"Family Matters" at Fotografihuset, Oslo

For the past twenty years, Gillian Laub has used her camera to document the emotional and political landscape of her own New York family. Family Matters explores Laub's growing discomfort in the face of the family's extravagant way of life and worries about privileges and family ties - an unrest that is further exacerbated when one day Gillian and her parents find themselves on opposite sides of the most divisive political campaign and subsequent presidency in recent American history. As the sharp political divide manifests between the family's two wings of Trump's supporters and opponents, Laub's family emerges as a metaphor for a nation still struggling with polarizing political realities. Ultimately, Family Matters is also a celebration of unwavering family love in the face of divisive rhetoric.

Family Matters was published on Aperture in 2021, one of the world's leading and most prestigious publishing houses for photography. The project has received extensive press coverage in the New York Times, Washington Post and Time Magazine, among others, and was recently shown at the International Center of Photography in New York. This is her first exhibition in Norway.
