Gillian Laub was born in 1975 and raised in Chappaqua New York. She comes from a large, eccentric and loving Jewish family.

Her maternal grandparents met in the Bronx, where her Grandma Bea would walk her German Shepard around in an effort to catch a glimpse of her crush, Irving, until he finally asked her out. They were Gillian's first photographic muses.

Gillian's grandpa Joe, a Golden Gloves Boxer, gifted her her first camera at the age of six.

Gillian's parents were married in 1969; at the time her mother was a social worker, and her father a gym teacher. They have been married for over 50 years.

Gillian fell in love with documenting her world through images and video at a young age. She made her first self-portrait at age nine.

The polaroid quickly became her favorite format; she created hundreds of portraits of her friends and family with her clunky instant camera.

Her family was, and continues to be, her favorite subject.

In 2007, Gillian married a writer name Tahl Raz. Today they live in New York City with their two daughters, Shiloh and Izzi.

Shortly after Izzi was born, Gillian recreated this image from 1975 of her and her sister with her own family.
