"Family Matters" at Photolux 2022
“From family portraits that give back an image of the society in which they were taken, to the romantic stories that have characterized every era – sometimes revealing its contradictions as well -, love has accompanied photography in its rapid and tumultuous development. And while photography changed, our way of telling and experiencing Love has also changed: in fact, visual language has increasingly become one of the ways in which we communicate and establish relationships with others and with ourselves. In everyday life, photography teaches us to love ourselves, to lose ourselves and to forget ourselves; in a nutshell, it guides us in expressing our feelings without expecting to define them or label them.
The selection of authors in the 2022 edition of Photolux Festival presents the multiplicity of possible approaches – some new and contemporary, others more classic and traditional – to the theme of love, which translate into unique and different stories and encounters, where we all can find a little bit of ourselves. With the exhibition proposal of “You can call it Love” we thought of photography no longer as a mirror or as a window – citing Szarkowski’s historical distinction -, but as an x-ray machine, capable of seeing through us and giving voice to some sensations, desires, emotions that we don’t even know we have.”

"Family Matters" at Fotografihuset, Oslo
For the past twenty years, Gillian Laub has used her camera to document the emotional and political landscape of her own New York family. Family Matters explores Laub's growing discomfort in the face of the family's extravagant way of life and worries about privileges and family ties - an unrest that is further exacerbated when one day Gillian and her parents find themselves on opposite sides of the most divisive political campaign and subsequent presidency in recent American history. As the sharp political divide manifests between the family's two wings of Trump's supporters and opponents, Laub's family emerges as a metaphor for a nation still struggling with polarizing political realities. Ultimately, Family Matters is also a celebration of unwavering family love in the face of divisive rhetoric.
Family Matters was published on Aperture in 2021, one of the world's leading and most prestigious publishing houses for photography. The project has received extensive press coverage in the New York Times, Washington Post and Time Magazine, among others, and was recently shown at the International Center of Photography in New York. This is her first exhibition in Norway.

“A new exhibition this fall at the International Center of Photography (ICP) offers renowned New York-based photographer Gillian Laub’s picture of an American family saga that feels both anguished and hopeful. Gillian Laub: Family Matters balances empathy with critical perspective, humor with horror, the closeness of family with the distance of the artist. The exhibition is curated by David Campany, ICP’s Managing Director of Programs, and coincides with the publication of a companion book by Aperture.” — ICP
The exhibition is in the museum’s new building at 79 Essex Street in New York. The fall/winter season at ICP also will feature the exhibitions Diana Markosian: Santa Barbara and INWARD: Reflections on Interiority.
